We are a little less than 10 weeks away from opening the doors to London IP Week 4.0 and we are taking it back to basics.Throughout this blog series we will be going through the four types of Intellectual property: Trade Secrets, Patents, Copyright and Trademarks.

This week, we will take a look at copyright.

Copyright is a type of intellectual property protection that safeguards original works of authorship, such as literature works, music, and art. Today, copyright laws are widely used to protect computer software and architecture.

In all countries where the Berne Convention applies, copyright laws are automatically applied once the idea has reached a tangible form, let it be a song, a drawing, blueprints, a computer program etc.

In addition, copyright laws do not last forever. After the original copyright owner dies the rights last for 50 to 100 years depending on the country.

In recent years, Youtube has been the frontline for one big legal dispute regarding the responsibility of copyright infringement committed by users. Although the platform is not liable, they will be if they have the specific knowledge of protected content being available and refraining from blocking access to it.

Well, that’s copyright in a nutshell. To learn more about copyright and the world of IP, join us for our IP conference, London IP Week 4.0, 6th-7th September 2021.
