Gita Shivarattan
Partner & Head of Data Protection (UK) | EY Law
Gita is the Head of Data Protection UK at EY Law.
Her practice focuses on data protection compliance, leveraging data as an asset and digital transformations in the Financial Services sector. Gita specialises in UK data protection law and attendant legal issues around data exploitation. She has extensive expertise in a range of technology, commercial and data protection law matters and regularly advises clients on IT outsourcing, DP and IT related issues in mergers and acquisitions, implementing new technologies and privacy by design, data breach reporting, and data subject rights requests. Gita has a wide range of experience in relation to data protection compliance and has supported a number of clients on GDPR compliance in connection with the implementation of new technologies and handling personal data breaches (including regulatory reporting requirements and notification to data subjects). Gita also provides practical guidance on the legal and regulatory aspects of digital transformations and implementing dynamic technologies such as cloud, automation and leveraging data as an asset.
Gita is recognised as a Rising Star in Privacy and Data Protection by Expert Guides 2020 and 2021 for both UK and Europe, is a member of the Financial Markets Law committee, Data Protection working group, the Data Protection Finance Group and certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (CIPP/E). She speaks regularly at conferences, is a co-author of UK Chambers TMT guide on data protection 2020.

Jonathan Freedman
Head of Technology & Security | Howard Kennedy
Jonathan Freedman is the Chief Technology Officer of London law firm Howard Kennedy, with a background in Enterprise Architecture and systems engineering within the UK professional services sector spanning more than 18 years. His current role is focused on both the development and implementation of new technology within the organisation and leading the firm’s cyber security/cyber awareness programs. In addition, he is jointly managing the firm’s internal GDPR compliance program. He holds multiple industry certifications including, CCNA Security, Certified Ethical Hacker, TOGAF, and ISO27001 with special interests in cyber security, ethical hacking, data protection, cryptography, secure systems design, mobile device security and technology innovation.
Karen Battersby
Director of Knowledge & Innovation | Freeths
Karen is the Director of Knowledge and Innovation at Freeths and leads the firm’s knowledge management, information, and legal learning and development services. She also co-leads innovation initiatives, with a focus on new law tech that enhances the firm’s services. She is a lawyer of many years’ experience and holds an MBA. She practised as a commercial lawyer, both in private practice and in-house, and has sat on the operational and main boards of FTSE corporates and other organisations as both an executive and non-executive director. Karen is an experienced lecturer and trainer, having taught everything from legal CPD courses to MBA qualifications to lawyers and other professionals. She has taught KM at MBA level at Henley Business School and Nottingham Law School, and was course leader on the MBA in Legal Practice at Nottingham, where she established the UK’s first postgraduate qualification in knowledge management for legal practice. Karen also led and developed some of the UK’s first webinar and online learning businesses for the legal profession.
Sam Ruback
Head of Legal | Thirdfort
Sam is Head of Legal at Thirdfort. Sam started his career as a litigator at Mishcon de Reya focussing on fraud and white collar crime. In recent years, Sam has worked at startups and fast growth companies in regulated industries across payments, proptech and legaltech.
