The countdown continues! Future Lawyer Week (FLW) Africa is just two weeks away – and we’re getting more and more excited with each day!

Like its three global sister events, FLW Africa focuses on the latest and greatest innovations across legal technology. We’ve designed this event to act as a place of networking, connection, discussion, and learning for every stakeholder in this ever-changing sector. This is our inaugural event in Africa, so we’ve planned three action-packed, legal-tech-driven days, February 21st – 23rd; keep reading to find out what we have in-store for every one of our attendees in Kampala, Uganda!

Day One

Our co-hosts, The Innovation Village, take over Day One with a tour of their headquarters. The Innovation Village works to design pathways for entrepreneurs who otherwise might not have a shot at making their dreams a reality. They do this by converging Network, Talent, Capital and Physical Assets leading Uganda and the region into industry 4.0. With dedicated tech sector labs for energy, tourism, health, and other major players in technology, this group is leading the way for a bigger, brighter, and tech-heightened Africa!

On the first day of FLW Africa, not only will you be able to tour The Innovation Village, but you’ll be able to grab an in-depth (and exclusive!) look into their revolutionary Legal Tech Lab! The Lab utilises the Village’s network of resources and connections to provide legal tech entrepreneurs with investors, mentors, testing platforms, and other key links to getting their idea off the ground and into the hands of those who need it most.

The Lab supported over 320 startups over the course of its first year – and you can see how they do it throughout day one! If you’re interested, get in touch with The Innovation Village.

Day Two

Ready to try your hand at innovation?

The United Nations are hosting Day Two with an ‘Access to Justice’ Hackathon! Whether you have experience with something similar or not, this space is designed to give every participant an opportunity to connect with like-minded people in the legal tech sector, test out some new technologies, and take home a new skill (and maybe even the gold)!

You’ll be working in teams to create innovative solutions to access to justice issues impacting local communities. Access to justice is a major driver behind the recent legal tech boom in Africa – learn more about how important getting tech into communities’ hands over on HiiL’s site! They’re paving the way to an accessible and modern future.

The hackathon environment is designed to be interactive, thrilling, and – above all else – fun! Several of our past shows have included these one-of-a-kind events; we not only know our way around them, but simply can’t recommend them enough!

Don’t believe us? Check out our blog on hackathons and listen to past testimonials from Future Lawyer Week USA 2.0.

Day Three

Bring on the conference!

We’ve filled the stage with industry leaders, key figures, and the best of the best in legal technology. Like our other conferences, the agenda is packed with thought-provoking panels, intriguing discussions, dedicated networking breaks, and an abundance of industry insight. Professionals from major groups like Stanbic Uganda Holdings Ltd., Dentons, Bowmans, The Uganda Association of Women Lawyers, and (of course) The Innovation Village will share their experiences from across the legal tech sector.

‘Can Teach an Old Dog a New Trick’ is our first panel and discusses the best practices in leveraging legal tech to increase collaboration efficiency and speed up processes across business units – perfect for adapting to the recent legal tech boom in Africa! Alice Blazevic Namuli, Partner & Head of Tech and Innovations at Katende, at Ssempebwa & Co Advocates and named one of the Top 5 Most Influential Women in Legal Tech in 2020 by the International Legal Technology Association, will give her insight on the panel.

After a networking lunch, take ‘A Seat at the Table’! This panel looks at why it’s important for end-users and junior fee-earners to take an active part in decisions relating to tech adoption in law firms and in-house legal teams. Hear from Rigardt Barnard, Founder of Concessus Consulting, and Allan Rwakakooko, the Head of Legal Services at Umeme Limited, the largest energy distributor in Uganda, as they use their experience to analyse this hot topic.

And ‘Just(ice) a Click Away’ asks: “how is technology making the justice system more accessible”? Rushongoza Begumya, Associate at TASLAF Advocates, and Barbara Kitui, Resource Person, Family Justice at The Justice Law and Order Sector will give their input and insight.

Roundtables cap off our speaking sessions! These are unique opportunities to ask questions and hear from experienced individuals in an intimate space. Rian Hancock, CEO of Africa NewLaw, will be hosting ‘Lawyer 2.0: A Toolbox for the Lawyer of the Future’. Naomi Thompson, the Legal Innovation & NewLaw Strategist, who will also join the ‘Can Teach an Old Dog a New Trick’ panel in the morning, will discuss how to develop a Digital Transformation Strategy for the Legal Department.

You can check out the full lineup of speakers over on the site now!

And after a full day of conference-ing… who doesn’t want a drink? Our Chair, Hellen Mukasa, the Legal Lead of The Innovation Village, will give the closing remarks as we draw the curtain on the conference – and open the bar! Our drinks reception will not only give you the chance to unwind a little and meet not just like-minded colleagues, but get to know the key industry players that have held the stage throughout the day!

The Innovation Village has also promised something incredibly special – a bit of cultural entertainment! Stick around to see some dancing.

We can’t wait to bring Future Lawyer Week down to Kampala!
