Future Lawyer Week Africa is less than four weeks away! We can’t wait to touch down in Uganda for the first time ever and host the fourth branch of our flagship conference with The Innovation Village. This 3-day event takes on everything legal technology – the latest innovations, industry leaders, we’ll even have a Hackathon hosted in conjunction with an international organisation!

Future Lawyer Week is a unique event series that focuses on the innovation in legal technology. By uniting all corners of the industry, these conferences are designed to facilitate discussions that can change the landscape of the sector. With eight sell-out predecessors, Future Lawyer Week Africa promises to bring the best of the conferences held in the UK and the United States.

Join us in Kampala from the 21st – 23rd of February at The Innovation Village to see for yourself what all of the hype is about!

What’s On?

Day 1 – Tour of The Innovation Village and their Legal Tech Lab

The first day of Future Lawyer Week (FLW) Africa is a special one – The Innovation Village is hosting a tour of their headquarters and their Legal Tech Lab! The Innovation Village finds routes for entrepreneurs looking to solve the most pressing challenges using technology (including legal tech). Their goal is to create a destination that grows companies that matter and are centred around not only solving the biggest community challenges, but utilising great innovation. The Legal Tech Lab harnesses useful resources by working with entrepreneurs to provide them with investors, mentors, testing platforms, even mentors to help their legal tech ideas to get going. Over its first year in action, the Lab has supported around 323 startups with free legal consultation!

Attendees to FLW Africa will be able to see the unique headquarters that turns dreams into reality throughout day one. Check out their website to learn more about their amazing corporation.

Day 2 – Hackathon

Get your hack on during FLW Africa! A full-day hackathon takes over the second day of the event; this is your chance to get to know other passionate people in your sector, learn a new skill (or two), try out some amazing tech, and bring home the gold! The hackathon is designed to facilitate collaboration and fun – focus and communicate in this fast-paced environment, and we’re sure you’ll pick everything up quickly (and have a blast!).

Not completely sold? Read all about hackathons – and what some of our attendees have to say about them – over on the blog!

Day 3 – Conference and Exhibition

That leaves one thing left for day three: the conference! The agenda is filled to the brim with experienced speakers, networking breaks, and unique opportunities to learn more about the latest and greatest in legal tech. Interested in thought-provoking discussions? Tune into a panel (or several) – ‘Can Teach an Old Dog a New Trick’ looks at the best practices in leveraging legal tech to increase collaboration efficiency and speed up processes across business units; ‘Change is the Only Constant’ analyses the key considerations when starting your Digital Legal Transformation journey; and ‘Just(ice) a Click Away’ discusses how technology is making the justice system more accessible. Whether you’re after an attention-grabbing panel or making connections with like-minded people, this conference is the place to be for everything legal tech.

Who’s Speaking?

Hear from industry experts throughout the day on an array of topics. Brian Kalule, Partner at Bowmans, will join the ‘Can Teach an Old Dog a New Trick’ panel. Kalule handles the firm’s TMT legal and regulatory aspects for both local and international clients. He advises some of the world’s leading companies in technology, is company secretary for the Uganda Fintech Service Providers Association, and the Chairperson of the Legal Committee of the Uganda Bankers Association. Catch him in the morning of day three!

Elizabeth Kemigisha is the Advocacy Manager and women economic justice project lead at The Uganda Association of Women Lawyers – FIDA Uganda. Elizabeth is a feminist lawyer with expertise in human rights law, feminist theory, and project management. She is interested in social, economic, and political inclusion of young people and women in the development of different societies. She’ll be on the ‘Change is the Only Constant’ panel on day three.

Rigardt Barnard, the founder of Concessus Consulting, is also joining the conference’s lineup! He worked as a practising attorney for 5 years, specialising in commercial property and financing, then built Concessus Consulting on the principle of utilising cost- and time-efficient legal services for companies. He’ll be on the panel ‘A Seat at the Table’, which looks at why it’s important for end-users and junior fee earners to take an active part in decisions relating to tech adoption in law firms and in-house legal teams.

We have some amazing speakers taking the stage! Check out our speaker spotlight for more details.
